Overview & Highlights

Welcome to The Butcher Baker, an exquisite culinary gem nestled in the charming town of Helensville, New Zealand. Located at 5 Commercial Road, this delightful restaurant has quickly become a must-visit for food enthusiasts and casual diners alike. With its open kitchen and captivating wood-fired oven, guests are treated to not just a meal but a complete sensory experience.

Stepping through the inviting courtyard, visitors are embraced by the intoxicating aroma of woodsmoke that permeates the air, setting the stage for what’s to come. As you settle into the beautifully designed space, ample natural light floods in, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that enchants patrons throughout the day and night.

The menu is a treasure trove of culinary delights, showcasing an impressive array of dishes that exemplify high-quality ingredients and expert preparation. From the much-lauded smoked tomato and whipped feta scrambled eggs that have drawn guest Frank Mair back for more, to Gavin Harris's recommendation of the lamb rack and ribeye steak, each dish tells a story of passion and precision. It's no wonder that diners rave about the mushroom doughnuts—a surprising twist that merges innovation with comfort.

As a highlight, the sourdough bread, baked in-house, comes highly praised, with many claiming it to be the best in Auckland. With a delightful crust and fluffy interior, it's a testament to the skill of the kitchen team led by the dedicated chef, whose three-day roast preparation is a culinary marvel. Each bite melts in your mouth, a perfect blend of flavors and textures that keeps patrons coming back for their beloved Sunday roast night.

Complementing the stellar food, the beverage selection is equally noteworthy. Choose from a curated list of wines featuring regional specialties like the Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, or enjoy refreshing options such as the Otakiri Reserve Sparkling Water and Almighty Organic Juices for those seeking non-alcoholic choices. There's something for everyone here, enhancing each morsel.

The Butcher Baker isn’t just about the food; it’s about the experience—the attentive and knowledgeable staff are a vital part of the atmosphere, creating a friendly and enjoyable environment for all guests. With each visit, whether for breakfast or a relaxed evening meal, you’re invited to bask in the warmth of hospitality. The charming design, along with thoughtful details such as beautifully presented dishware, elevate the dining experience to new heights, as Annabelle Gibson noted.

In essence, The Butcher Baker is a culinary destination that satisfies not just the palate but also the soul. Each visit is a celebration of good food, great company, and the joy of savoring life’s little pleasures. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this enchanting establishment is well worth the trip to Helensville.

The Definition of Sunday Vibes We visited The Butcher Baker in Helensville for a relaxed coffee and breakfast, and were genuinely impressed—not just by the quality of the food and coffee, but also by the welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. As you arrive, you’re greeted by a charming quaint courtyard that sets the tone. Inside, the lovely scent of woodsmoke from the open kitchen fills the space, and you can see the chefs working with care and focus, which adds a great authentic touch. The interior and exterior are both beautifully designed—thoughtful, inviting, and cosy. A small detail which I really appreciated: the dishware. Beautiful, well-chosen plates and cups that subtly elevated the whole experience. We shared a toasted scone with burnt whipped butter, which was surprisingly so delicious—not your average scone. The sourdough toast with preserve and burnt whipped butter was also excellent, with high-quality ingredients that shone through in every bite. Who knew you could elevate scones and toast like that? Definitely impressed. We paired everything with flat whites, which were well-made and smooth. I don’t get out to Helensville often, but I’ll definitely be making a point to return to The Butcher Baker. It’s a place worth coming to - highly recommend!!!

Such an amazing place! Smells like cozy warm night inside with the fire going; now imagine fresh healthy and delicious meals being delivered to you with such a fantastic staff. They are always smiling and greeting you with warmth. We love coming here for the scones too! Pictures: The eggs and bacon were super hot on arrival!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An absolute standout – a hidden gem out West! Brilliant restaurant with exceptional food, flawless presentation, and a stunning layout. The open kitchen adds to the experience — you can watch the chefs work their magic over a real wood fire, which adds incredible depth and flavour to every dish. Everything we ordered was beautifully cooked and bursting with flavour — easily some of the best food I’ve had in years. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and stylish without being overdone. The staff were fabulous — friendly, attentive, and impressively professional. And the chef? Absolutely incredible. You can tell there’s real passion and skill behind every plate. This place is a true secret out West — Can’t wait to come back. Highly recommended.

My wife and I took a meander up the Kaipara Harbour along South Head to Te Rau Puriri Regional Park—because nothing says "long weekend windy boredom breaker" like winding rural roads and glorious scenery. On the way back, we stopped at Lake Ototoa Scenic Reserve and Shelley Beach, ticking off our quota of tranquil nature stops for the day. We pulled into Helensville in search of a pit stop and sustenance and stumbled upon The Butcher Baker. What a "royal" weekend find! Welcoming staff, top-notch service, and most importantly, food that made me want to curtsy to the chef ! Fittingly, this was over the King’s Birthday weekend—which still feels weird to say after a lifetime of Queen’s Birthdays. I guess it’s the same long weekend, just with a slightly more masculine cake topper. Highly recommend!
